The Supreme Court has said that Corona has ruined many lives and it is heart-wrenching to see the lives of children who have lost their father, mother or both during the pandemic are at stake. The court, however, expressed satisfaction over the schemes announced by the central and state governments to provide relief to such children.
The top court said that the authorities have made satisfactory progress in identifying the children who have either become orphans or have lost one of their parents during the corona pandemic.

A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and Aniruddha Bose said, “We are happy that the Government of India and the State Governments/Union Territories have announced schemes to provide assistance to the needy children. We have no doubt that the concerned authorities will leave no stone unturned to provide basic facilities to such children immediately. The court was hearing the matter by taking suo motu cognizance of the effect of Corona on the Children’s Protection Homes. The court said in the order that more than one lakh children have lost either mother, father or both during the pandemic.

The Supreme Court bench said, Corona has ruined the lives of many people especially young children who have lost their parents. It is heart-wrenching to see that the lives of many such children are at stake. The Court said that the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) will have to expedite the investigation to identify the children who are in need of care and protection as per the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
