US Vice President Kamala Harris said on her arrival in Singapore that the US is currently focusing its full attention on the evacuation of people from Afghanistan. After this, there will be a lot of time to consider the removal of the US Army from there. Harris met with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Sen Loong and President Halimah Yacoub on Monday and discussed ways to reduce China’s growing economic and security influence in the region.
Lee told a joint press conference after the meeting that since the US entered Afghanistan twenty years ago, terrorist organizations have stopped considering Afghanistan as a safe haven. Singapore is grateful for this. We hope that Afghanistan will not become a stronghold of terrorist organizations again.
Lee said that Singapore has sent its military force to Afghanistan so that it does not weaken the global fight against terrorism. Harris also thanked Lee for helping the United States rescue people in Afghanistan. Singapore has sent its Air Force’s MRTT aircraft to Afghanistan. It can carry a load of 266 passengers or 37 thousand kg of luggage at a time.
The US is airlifting its citizens and concerned Afghans to save them from the havoc of the Taliban. On the other hand, Britain has requested the US to extend the deadline of the operation to evacuate people from Kabul beyond August 31. Britain says that without America, no country will be able to help people leaving Afghanistan.
The Taliban, on the other hand, has threatened America. Taliban spokesman Sohail Shaheen has said that if the US delays the withdrawal of its troops, it will face dire consequences. US forces must leave Afghanistan by August 31. At the same time, US President Joe Biden has said that the government is still discussing increasing the deployment of troops to Afghanistan after August 31.
