On Sunday, the army carried out a coup in the West African country of Guinea. The army’s assuming power was announced on state television by an army colonel. Said, the government of President Alpha Condé has been dissolved and all traffic through the country’s borders has been stopped. Earlier, for several hours, firing took place near the presidential palace. The Guinean military coup has happened before.
Defense Ministry claims the attempt failed
Meanwhile, the country’s Defense Ministry has claimed that the coup attempt has been foiled. Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, who appeared on television with Guinea’s national flag, said, “The duty of a soldier is to defend the country.” The army is doing the same thing. When the colonel read this written statement, six soldiers were standing beside him. The colonel did not say anything about President Conde. It is not known where and in what condition the 83-year-old Konde is after the shooting near the palace.
President’s popularity declines
Condé’s popularity in the country began to decline after he expressed his desire for a third term as the presidency. Conde used to say that there should be no time limit for him as President. Colonel Doumbouya said, the time for self-centralization of politics is over. In politics we cannot trust one man. We have to take steps in public interest.
After gaining independence from France in 1958, the people of the country did not achieve anything special. There are not enough arrangements for the convenience of 1.27 crore population of the country. The Colonel said, the Constitution of the country has become ineffective and the borders have also been closed for a week. Colonel Doumbouya had till now the responsibility of the special unit of the army.
