Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla was on Thursday given an extension of one year beyond his current term, which was to end next week, according to an official order by the Personnel Ministry. Bhalla, a 1984 batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, was appointed as the Home Secretary in August 2019.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in service of Bhalla as Home Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs for a period of one year from the present tenure i.e. on 22.08.2021,” the order said. His term was extended in October last year till August 22.
Bhalla was due to retire in November 2020 after 60 years of retirement. The ministry’s order issued in October last year said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of Bhalla’s service as Home Secretary beyond the date of his retirement i.e. from November 30, 2020 to August 22, 2021.” .’
